About Shelter Island

The name Shelter Island comes from the Manhanset Indian name given to the island, which meant island sheltered by islands.  The Manhansets had a peaceful and bountiful life on the island, which is protected from bad weather by the sheltering arms of the North and South forks of Long Island.  The surrounding waters are full of fish and water fowl, while the woods and fields are bursting with deer and other wildlife.
Nearly one-third of the 8,000 acre Island is owned by the Nature Conservancy and kept in its nature state.  Shelter Island is for those who seek respite from the noise and turmoil, which has become so much a part of city and suburban life.
The island can be reached by car ferry; from Greenport on the North Fork and from North Haven/Sag Harbor on the South Fork.  Our proximity to Greenport, Sag Harbor, and the Hamptons affords guests the availability of an abundance of antiquing, shopping, and sight-seeing.

The Belle Crest Inn is located on a pastoral setting at the juncture of Dering Harbor and the Shelter Island Heights.  Our Inn is just a short drive, bicycle ride or leisurely walk to expansive beaches.  You may want to visit the Mashomack Preserve, play a game of tennis at one of the islands three courts, two of which are in walking distance, or play a round of golf at the Shelter Island Country Club, which is open to the public.  Maybe you would prefer kayaking or even visiting one of the Island’s many galleries.

Be sure to stop in Vonnie’s Studio located on the grounds of the Belle Crest Inn for a preview of handmade items, including jewelry, being created for the annual Shelter Island Crafts Fair.

The possibilities are endless!
